Katie Smart NP-BC

Certified Nurse Practitioner

Functional Medicine Practitioner

My name is Katie and I have proudly worked in the medical field for over 17 years. I obtained my undergraduate degree from the University of Maine, gaining invaluable experience as a registered nurse in a diverse range of inpatient and outpatient healthcare settings. Upon completing my graduate degree from Saint Joseph’s College, I transitioned into the role of Nurse Practitioner, specializing in urgent care, orthopedics, and occupational health. I am a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner recognized by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners as well as the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Moreover, I have pursued additional training in Functional Medicine through the esteemed Institution of Functional Medicine to include advanced training in women’s health, hormone therapy, environmental health, and cardiometabolic health.

My interest in health and wellness has been a significant part of my life from an early age. After spending many years working within the traditional medical model, I observed that its focus often veers away from prevention and holistic wellness. A great deal of emphasis is placed on downstream interventions, neglecting the critical importance of addressing the root causes of health issues. This realization motivated me to open Smart Healthcare in order to provide individuals with the care they deserve.

I believe that progress requires understanding the current health status and identifying realistic steps for improvement. My role is to provide guidance, resources, and support while empowering you to take an active role in your health. Together, we can establish measurable milestones and celebrate achievements along the way, cultivating a sense of accomplishment and encouraging sustained change. Your health is a personal journey, and with the right plan and support, positive transformation is always within reach.

The benefits of findings a Functional Medicine Practitioner

The traditional medical model is not ideal for promotion of health and wellness. Instead, it focuses on downstream effects, treating  the disease after it develops; labeling a set of symptoms and treating with pharmaceuticals without considering what the root causes are. Functional medicine as a component of medical care provides a more comprehensive lens. The core principle of functional medicine is to identify the root cause of an individuals presentation in order to develop a personalized treatment plan, taking into consideration such factors as life experiences, family history, exposures, diet, activity level, etc.  Functional medicine looks at lifestyle first, and supplements or pharmaceuticals as adjuncts to treatment. The  primariy goal being health transformation.
